Symptoms of low thyroid can occur even when thyroid testing falls within what is generally accepted as the normal range. Normal may not be optimal for an individual, and thyroid treatment may still be considered to treat symptoms that are related to low thyroid activity.
A normal and healthy thyroid produces two primary thyroid hormones-thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Under ideal conditions the body activates the T4 to T3 within the tissues to optimize metabolic function.
A combination therapy of T4 and T3 may be considered when patients do not respond optimally to standard T4-only medications (such as levothyroxine) or when symptoms persist despite normalized lab values. Thyroid therapy can include both T4 and T3 and this combination may be more effective for symptom resolution in select individuals.
When prescribed and closely monitored by a qualified physician, combination thyroid therapy may help restore hormonal balance, alleviate symptoms, and support overall health and metabolic function.
